In 2017, on their first visit to Phantom Hands, INODA+SVEJE were impressed by our cane weavers’ levels of skill and dexterity, and encouraged them to experiment with non-traditional patterns. What emerged from those experiments became the signature weave of the Tangāli Collection, and is testament to how traditional crafts adapt to contemporary design. In this video, designer Nils Sveje speaks about the collaborative process of creating this weave.

In Bangalore, where the Phantom Hands workshop is based, tangāli is the local Kannada language word for a ‘cool breeze’. We decided to name the collection after the cool monsoon breeze that accompanied INODA+SVEJE’s visit to Bangalore.
