Product Description

The decade from 1955 to 1965 was probably Pierre Jeanneret’s most prolific in terms of the furniture he would design for government and public buildings in Chandigarh. The furniture for these spaces reflected both the solemnity and the symbolism of their contexts, while keeping a clear-eyed view of the materials available, and designs that would lend themselves easily to mass production.

This compact desk was original designed for many of Chandigarh’s administrative offices, where the flair of its X leg would be balanced out by the straight lines of the rest of the structure. The floating, leather covered desktop added a subtle, authoritative touch.

Our re-edition is true to the design of the original and carries all its structural nuances—mitre joints (with mortise and tenon reinforcement), gently rounded edges on the legs, and the circular, finger-pull recesses on the drawers and the storage compartment. Additionally, our re-edition comes with international standard German-engineered hardware. The drawers are mounted on soft-close channels in galvanised steel for smooth opening and closing; and the storage compartment behind the drawers has soft-close nickel-plated steel hinges which prevent slamming, and reduce stress on the panel.

Product Options

We offer this piece in three finishes: Natural Teak and Dark Stain as standard finishes, and Y4 Light Walnut as a premium finish.

All three finishes begin with hand-sanding through progressively finer grits of sandpaper. The Natural Teak is finished with a hard wax oil that brings out the wood’s golden-brown colour. The Dark Stain and Y4 Light Walnut—a proprietary shade—both receive a waterborne stain, followed by three coats of compatibility-tested hydro-oil.

Wood Finish Options - Natural Teak (Teak) / Dark Stain (Teak) / Y4 Light Walnut (Teak)
