Product Description
The Saddle Chair was designed in 1974 for the Neptune Hotel (now Heritance Ayurveda) in Beruwela, 60 km from Colombo. The original chairs remained in use at the bar until the hotel’s refurbishment in 2012. The Saddle Chair also furnished the bar at the Madurai Club in India, which Bawa redesigned around the same time.
With its striking combination of leather and wood, the Saddle Chair bears some resemblance to Danish designer Illum Wikkelsø’s 1960s Sling Lounge Chair, which may have been an inspiration. Although the chairs share little beyond their materials, both reflect modernist design principles, emphasizing clean lines, functional form, and a seamless blend of local craftsmanship with contemporary living.
Phantom Hands’ re-edition retains Bawa’s original proportions while updating materials for durability and sustainability. Handmade locally sourced leather has been replaced with high-quality Indian buffalo leather sourced from J & R Guram, celebrated campaign furniture makers based in Delhi. The frame is crafted from North American red oak, chosen for its strength, environmental credentials, and ability to take color. The wood is lightly brushed for a tactile feel and sealed with an eco-friendly, water-based finish.
The leather is available in three colour options - black, burgundy and chocolate brown.
