Product Description

Faded stenciled lettering on the sides of some of the original furniture pieces from Chandigarh was often a good indication of the spaces they were designed for. The sewing stools in particular, have been seen with markings that read “Phy. Lab-63”, “PSA/CH/41”, or “C.C.I.”, among others, indicating that this low stool was used in places as varied as Punjab University’s physics lab, the Punjab Secretariat’s Administrative office and in some sections of the Capitol Complex. Originally designed as a stool that allowed for long hours of seated work, it could be neatly tucked under a worktable once its sitters were done for the day.

Because the furniture designed under Jeanneret was meant for public buildings with multiple uses, the simply designed pieces easily fit into a range of spaces. Phantom Hands’ re-edition of this stool carries all the nuances of the original—the broad wooden side panels for legs, the v-shaped dipped seat, and a low, solid wooden stretcher connecting the two side panels. The cushion—available in a curated selection of fabrics—was specially designed to align with the contours of the seat, and ensures comfort for extended sitting.

Product Options

We offer this piece in five finishes, with Natural Teak and Dark Stain as standard finishes; and Black, Y4 Light Walnut, and Z4 Dark Walnut as premium finishes.

All five finishes begin with hand-sanding the wood with progressively finer grits of sandpaper. The Natural Teak is finished with a hard wax oil that brings out the wood’s golden-brown colour. The Dark Stain, Y4 Light Walnut, and Z4 Dark Walnut (with the latter two being specially developed proprietary shades) all receive a waterborne stain, followed by three coats of compatibility-tested hydro-oil.

In the Black finish, the wood is sprayed with an eco-friendly, waterborne paint, followed by a waterborne top-coat sealant that leaves the grains and patterns visible.

The cushion for the Sewing Stool is available in a choice of nine Andaman fabric colours, and five Radhanagar fabric colours from specialty textile company, Zanav.
